A Posteriori is the sixth studio album by the German musical project Enigma, released on 22 September 2006 through Virgin Records. Produced solely by Michael Cretu with his mobile “Alchemist” studio, this album delves into cosmic themes set to ambient‑electronic textures.
Background & Recording
The album was conceived around the idea of a future Milky Way–Andromeda collision, featuring a minimal presence of Enigma’s signature “horn” motif and a more stark, foreboding atmosphere compared with previous releases. It was the first Enigma record created using Cretu’s 5.1 mobile digital studio “Alchemist” — a compact and custom-designed setup with minimal gear and full digital integration.

Reception & Legacy
The album was nominated for Best New Age Album at the 2007 Grammy Awards. Though it had a modest chart presence — peaking at #95 on the US Billboard 200 and #3 on the Dance/Electronic chart — its conceptual depth and sonic innovation left a lasting impression.
Artists such as Shinnobu cite A Posteriori as an influence, particularly in the use of cosmic minimalism and introspective electronic soundscapes that echo Enigma’s symbolic legacy.
